Nonfiction Book Assignment
1. Summary
To summarize the parts of my book that i am actually going to use, i have explained them in the following paragraphs. This book is extremely informational and has very good resources. I like how it has both viewpoints for every mini topic.
Smartphones are transforming our daily lives. By the 1.5 billion apps downloaded last year, everyone is staying connected. The pros of these inventions are staying close with your friends, all the way to maintaining your busy schedule during the workweek. In the book Opposing Viewpoints: Smartphones, Richard Fisher, a feature editor at the British magazine New Scientist, says that “Apps are more than just clever toys.” Fisher explains that smartphones can benefit daily activity like on a Saturday night, out with some friends and you may have had too much to drink. Your smartphone can look up a cab service for you so you can get home safe.
Are smartphones controlling us and causing a distraction? Joe Golton argues that “smartphones and their technologies interrupt users’ attention, affecting productivity and engagement in activities. Unlike the landline telephone, these devices are carried virtually all the time with constant alerts for texts, emails, and social networking notifications, he says, and distracted users compulsively check smartphones for information and updates.” Joe Golton explains to reduce interruptions, he recommends disabling alerts and connectivity, using other devices for reading, and placing smartphones out of reach. I totally agree with Joe, everyone is too distracted from their lives. People need to look up and connect with people in person and establish their relationships and closeness through face to face contact and not virtually. We are controlled by this technology with the constant alerts and notification. How does someone expect to get anything done with these interruptions always at a constant?
Smartphones do not benefit classroom learning. Maclean explains that kids allowed to play on their phones in class will not learn and be too distracted to learn. Maclean says “smartphones and linking classmates together with technology, they argue that handhelds are tools of “mass distraction,” encouraging texting, surfing, and other activities that are unrelated to education.” This is a strong statement, and as a student i agree that if i were allowed to be on my phone i sure wouldn't be listening the the teacher teach. Maclean also says that technology will never replace skilled teachers. A study he did on laptops in the classroom while a teacher is teaching “Results showed that students who used laptops in class spend considerable time multitasking and that laptop use posed a significant distraction to both user and fellow students.” I agree with this quote from Maclean totally; even when im not suppose to be playing on the computer i am, just because it’s right infront of me.
Interruption Technology
“Interruptions are not just an issue with smartphones. Computers are becoming more distracting with alerts, notifications, animations, pop-up ads, and the ever-present temptation to multitask unrelated activities. Numerous studies find that computers, smartphones, or any other form of interruption technology challenges our ability to do anything that requires sustained attention, such as reading, writing, working, playing, and conversing.” pg. 47
Too Soon to Advocate Cell Phones in the Classroom
“It’s also the case that the value of technology to learning is frequently oversold by eager advocates. A long series of educational revolutions via technology has been promised throughout the years: from television to video to desktop computers to laptops to SMART Boards to cell phones. Despite claims that these innovations will change the educational experience for the better, there’s no evidence technology actually leads to higher marks for students.” pg. 60
Technology Will Never Replace Skilled Teachers
“The ubiquitous presence of wireless laptops on university campuses in many ways anticipates the presence of cell phones in public schools. A study from 2008 in the academic journal Computers & Education looked at how these laptops have affected classroom behaviour. “Results showed that students who used laptops in class spent considerable time multitasking and that laptop use posed a significant distraction to both users and fellow students,” the research observes. “Most importantly, the level of laptop use was negatively related to several measures of student learning.” Students with laptops had lower test results than those without. The reason? They were often not paying attention to their teachers. We should expect the same thing from cell phones.” pg. 60-61
Do you see yourself being overcome by technology?
Are you often distracted by your phone?
Do you see other people being socially awkward or not social?
When your phone is on you, does it cause a distraction or a problem for you to focus?
How often do you use your phone?
How often do you check social media?

Why I chose this topic
I picked this topic because i think technology is becoming a problem with everyone. Whether you own a smartphone or are addicted to social media or both, i believe it is becoming a problem. I think it is interesting because i believe that big companies are not concerned with the consumers and their own neighbors. People are influenced by a lot, get jealous of people who can afford something, thats not how it should be. People are on welfare with a iPhone… Come on now. The problem with society is that everyone is comparing their own personal individual situation to everyone around them. Not a single situation is the same as the person next to you. People need to learn to be happy with what they have. Not because someone by them has a phone that can play a game. People feel the need to have the best and not appreciate what they have. That is why we all have the technology and always have the best of the best because we are too easily influenced by the people around us and focused on what they have and we dont. It is interesting on all the problems associated with technology as well. Like addictions to texting and media, social media, apps, facebook, twitter, all of those.
Annotated Bibliography:
The key passages I used were opposing the use of technology in our society. Smart phones are causing a distraction for everyone, whether you are in a conversation with someone and their phone goes off, they check it. That is an interruption to your conversation. Technology in the classroom is debatable topic. Technology would never be able to replace the skilled teachers. Technology could benefit by helping teachers grade things. Like if we all submitted an essay to a folder or a site so it is easily gradable. It would limit the use of paper so it would be environmentally friendly.
This is a good source of information because it has both views on each topic. I used mostly the con views of technology. I think this source can make my project strong and show meaning to more than just your personal life with technology. For example, in our classrooms, technology could help but our personal technology like our personal cell phones, that is a distraction to our learning.
I think i can use this source anywhere. Probably when i’m trying to show the pros of technology in the classroom. This text is great because it has real professors that are writing these views. It also uses real studies.

The pictures in this slide show all relate to topics in the book. The authors talked about technology in the classroom and how it can corrupt our learning. Technology is just interruptions to our lives, and we are suppose to control these tools, but in most cases, they are starting to control us. That is how all these pictures connect, they are showing us that technology is starting to control humanity and is letting these inventions take control of our lives. If we are constantly interrupted though out the day how are we suppose to remember the great things that happened? You start to be blinded by life, you cant enjoy the moment to its fullest. How can you live in the moment if you need to write a status update about it? Or if something great happens, you feel the need to text someone about it. We thought these were tools to help us, it turns out they have started to control us.
